Back ground:
The Ghana Grains Council (GGC) is a private sector corporate body, limited by guarantee, incorporated in March 2010 with financial and technical support from the United States Agency International Development (USAID) through the Agribusiness & Trade Promotion (ATP) and Ghana Agricultural Value Chain Enhancement (ADVANCE) program. GGC is a membership based organization, comprising of grain value chain stakeholders, including farmers, traders, millers, input suppliers, financial institutions etc.
The Council has positioned itself as a leading industry body for setting warehousing standards for grains based on the best industry practices, and enforcement of these practices through its warehouse certification and inspections code of practices for the grain industry.
Ghana Grains Council is implementing a Warehouse Receipting System (WRS) for grains. It is expected that, the WRS will enable grain value chain stakeholders to improve the quality of grains to be marketed and attract better prices for their grains. Also reduce warehouse storage losses and improve access to collateralised credit at a reasonable and affordable cost.
The GGC certified warehouses will facilitate the transfer of warehouse receipts among the members of the council which would generate graded grain prices. The warehouses would also provide stock position report on a daily basis. All these information would be useful to the market as reference prices for planning grain trading.
